The Skin I Live In (2011) – Pedro Almodovar

Spellbinding creeper about obsession and surgery contains one disturbing image or idea after another. It unravels like an onion by one stinking layer at a time and contains a legitimate eye-popping twist that was logical and obvious in hindsight but far too sick to anticipate. Antonio Bandares is fantastic as an intense surgeon and the captor of Vera (played by Elena Anaya) a poor soul he has transformed into the spitting image of his dead wife. This is Hitchcock meets Takashi Miike and yet it’s Almodovar through and through. Anaya is a revelation in a bizarre dual performance. She reminds me of Irene Jacob and I’m not sure I can give a higher compliment.
