Super 8 (2011) – J.J. Abrams

The movie can’t come through on the promise of its first hour but that first hour is pretty damn good as homage to early Spielberg (who produced the film). It tells the tale of Ohio youths in the last gasps of the ‘70s making a movie on a Super 8 camera and stumbling upon strange, strange occurrences punctuated by a spectacular train crash that their camera inadvertently captures (but not well enough to use in the film, the 12-year old headstrong director laments).  The tween actors are enough to carry Super 8 (Elle Fanning in particular) but director Abrams unwisely splits his focus to their parents and other adults to the detriment of the entire enterprise.
