Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows is told with a lot of style and energy, the problem is it doesn’t have much of a story to tell. Oh, there’s plenty of things happening, explosions, shootings, train rides, peace summits that are actually international powder-kegs and so on but they don’t add up to a breathless adventure just a lot of work. Robert Downey Jr. reprises his role as the ultra-observant gumshoe but his pithy asides and general naughtiness can’t save the situations he’s put in. Jude Law returns as Watson as well, when they’re given a moment of stillness, they’re fine together. More interesting is Jared Harris as the villainous Professor Moriarty and for the final confrontation the film gives us a tantalizing glimpse of what would be a terrific movie except that the 90 proceeding minutes were spent on typical and somewhat boring action scenes.
