Rampart (2011) – Oren Moverman

Character study of a bad cop (Woody Harrelson) romanticizing himself as the last bulwark to an encroaching time where police brutality is looked down upon, and the protector of a time that never was. There are so many fine performances in this movie from Harrelson as the worthy lead to Sigourney Weaver, Ned Beatty, Ben Foster and Ice Cube all trying to help or harm (or both) Harrelson after he is embroiled in a brutality scandal. The casting is fairly inspired too, especially with Anne Heche and Cynthia Nixon as estranged lovers of Harrelson and Robin Wright as his current bedmate and prosecuting lawyer. All the actresses represent shades of the world that Harrelson’s cop hates but is drawn to. The performances elevate the material which is slightly plodding and over complicated
