Not since Synecdoche, New York (2008) has there been a movie of such disparate critical opinion as Godard’s Film Socialisme. Both films ended up on many Best Of lists and perhaps even more Worst Ofs. There doesn’t seem to be anyone who didn’t either passionately champion Film Socialisme or just as passionately deride it. Until now. Perhaps the worst thing I can say about the movie is that it moved me in no way. It failed to bring me to ecstasy and it also failed to frustrate me to madness. It simply was. Was it inaccessible and purposefully opaque? Yes. Did it have much to say? Not to me, it didn’t. Was it visually arresting and fascinating in its juxtaposed images? Not enough, but a little. For a movie that has been so loved and despised, all I can say is that I liked it okay. Which is disappointing as I was hoping to be either enraptured or pissed off.
